WVU esports champ competes in third Madden national title game in as many years | E-News

One of the best Madden NFL players in the world is again representing West Virginia University well on the national esports stage with a great run culminating in a second place finish in this year’s Level Next Madden National Championship.

Noah Johnson, the defending collegiate national champion and a sophomore economics major from Baltimore, Maryland, played strong in multiple matchups Thursday evening (Oct. 20) before finishing behind Towson, 31-29, in the title game.

“We are all proud of Noah,” Josh Steger, director of WVU esports and varsity coach, said. “His continued dominance sends a message to the rest of the nation that our program is leading the way in collegiate esports.”

Johnson won the Level Next title with WVU in 2021 and finished as runner-up the previous year while playing for Maryland.

His second place finish this year comes with a cash prize of $15,000.

In addition to Madden, WVU esports fields competitive teams for Rocket League, Call of Duty and Valorant.

The University officially launched its esports minor earlier this year, offering courses in the College of Applied Human Sciences, the John Chambers College of Business and Economics and the Reed College of Media.
