Identified by Dr Richard Oddy from Birmingham City University, two primary reasons explain why the esports community thrives in the West Midlands. Firstly, nearly 40 per cent of Birmingham’s vibrant youth population is amongst Europe’s youngest. This demographic ensures community bonding and social interactions.
Secondly, West Midlands’ extensive educational facilities offer the necessary resources to cultivate future esports leaders. The Birmingham City Business School proactively offers a BA (Hons) Esports Management degree to prepare students with the skills required to excel in the rapidly growing industry.
In addition, multiple colleges provide Level 3 qualifications particularly designed to facilitate entry into the esports world. By promoting a solid educational foundation, the West Midlands intends to retain and lure top-tier esports talents, guaranteeing the region’s continuous growth as a hotbed for excellence.

Despite UK-based esports teams such as Fnatic, Endpoint, and Excel Esports garnering international recognition, the UK esports scene still lags when compared to China and the US. However, certain UK teams consistently compete in key tournaments and have achieved considerable success.
