In 2024, the League of Legends (LoL) esports ecosystem continues its evolution with Riot Games announcing several changes aimed at raising the level of competition.

In the previous year, Riot explored various new formats including double elimination, the Swiss Stage, and multiple best-of-fives. This year, the focus is on creating a tighter and smoother link between the two major international events: the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) and the LoL World Championship (Worlds).

Here’s what to anticipate for the 2024 LoL esports season:

Legends Hall

In celebration of the 14th anniversary of LoL esports, Riot will recognize players who have made significant contributions to the game through the Legends Hall.

A panel of esports industry experts and veterans from every region will select the professional players worthy of recognition based on their gameplay proficiency in LoL, their consistency throughout their careers, and their impact on the LoL community.

Those inducted into the Legends Hall will have their outstanding careers celebrated in the physical world and within the game.

Changes in Worlds regional slot allocations

As a result of some minor leagues consolidation towards the end of 2023, the number of spots each region can have at Worlds has been adjusted.

Each of the four major regions – LoL European Championship (LEC), LoL Championship Series (LCS), LoL Champions Korea (LCK), and LoL Pro League (LPL) – will have three slots at Worlds for their strongest teams of the season.

The Pacific Championship Series, which recently integrated the LoL Japanese League (LJL), and the Vietnam Championship Series will retain two slots each. The Liga Latinoamérica (LLA) and Campeonato Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLOL), on the other hand, will each hold on to one slot.

Additionally, more World slots will be available for the top team and region at the Mid-Season Invitational

MSI: The Path to Worlds Triumph

In a historic first, the MSI winning team will seal an automatic spot at Worlds, bagging an extra slot for their region.

The region that performs second-best at MSI will also earn an extra seed, intensifying the contest and linking MSI directly to Worlds.

MSI and Worlds 2024 Locations

MSI 2024 is set to take place in Chengdu, China from the 1st to the 19th of May, marking the first time this thriving city will host an international LoL esports event.

Worlds 2024, meanwhile, returns to Europe. The Play-Ins and Swiss Stages will begin in Berlin at the renovated Riot Games Arena, moving on to Paris’ Adidas Arena for the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, and concluding with the Finals at the iconic O2 Arena in London, UK.

As the stakes rise, regional seasons are set to start soon. Check out lolesports.com for more details.
