An unprecedented event in Minnesota is set to see six high school eSports teams from the region competing for the first-ever Battle in the North title. This information was made available through a press release by Alexandria Technical and Community College, the event will span two days, from Feb. 17-18, 2024, and will be held at the same college in Alexandria, Minnesota. The competing teams are from Alexandria, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Little Falls, Perham, Apple Valley, and Lakeville.
The victors will earn a $5,000 donation to expand their eSports program, in addition to a $1,000 ATCC scholarship for each squad member, which could help them to further their eSports journey at Alexandria College.
The competition will be in Valorant, a 5v5 character-based tactical FPS from the creators of League of Legends, Riot Games. Valorant demands specific team roles, strategic thinking, talent, and teamwork from each player and their team, with the standard matches in BO1 format, and the finals in BO3 format.
Gardonville Cooperative Telephone Association, the only local telecom service provider in Alexandria and its neighboring areas, generously provided the prizes. They are also the official sponsor of the first Battle in the North eSports Tournament. Gardonville stated in a release, “Beyond our service as a top-tier fiber-optic internet, voice, and TV service provider, we are committed to enriching the lives of our communities. We take pride in giving our time, funds, and resources back to our communities as they are our home too. We are excited to sponsor the inaugural Battle of the North and look forward to supporting the growth of the eSports program at a deserving school and its students!”

Stories are sometimes reported under the authorship of “staff” in our newsroom. This generic byline is typically used if the news item is a rewrite of a basic news brief from an official source, such as city press releases about road closures, when no additional reporting is required. Items with multiple authors or that are the result of compiling previously reported news from different sources may also carry this byline. If information is sourced from elsewhere, it is explicitly stated within the article.
