In Pennsylvania, HU Storm from Harrisburg University holds a unique position as the only varsity sports team of the institute. Yet, their playing field is not traditional – it’s a digital screen.
“The essence of the game is not limited to just playing the video game or achieving rewards,” argues Coach Tanner Deegan, head coach of the HU Storm’s League of Legends team. To him, the same values that are derived from pursuits like sports or music, such as discipline, teamwork, and performance under pressure, are central to esports as well.
The Esports program at Harrisburg University was introduced five years ago. Since then, the HU Storm has not only honed the competitive abilities of its players, but has also fostered skills that help the athletes succeed in their lives beyond the game and the university.
Deegan, having been deeply involved with Esports full-time for six years, notes how the game has evolved over time – highlighting increased maturity and acceptance.
With their growing popularity, esports formerly dismissed by parents as a waste of time, have now gained credibility as a professional avenue. Players can now secure educational funds from institutions such as Harrisburg University and others across Pennsylvania due to their gaming prowess.
“The scholarships give parents a reason to support their children’s passion for the game”, adds Deegan.
Harrisburg University’s esports team, the HU Storm, boasts an impressive record. Besides several collegiate titles, the squad holds a national championship from their now-defunct Overwatch team and regularly ranks among the country’s top 25 for their League of Legends team.
Consequently, Harrisburg University and the HU Storm are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to make Pennsylvania a hotbed for esports.
Deegan aspires to instill his League of Legends team with three C’s: confidence, competence, and camaraderie. This, he asserts, not only aids their performance and brings glory to the university, but also aids in their personal growth.
“We aim to impart skills like goal setting, time management, and effective task prioritization. Ultimately, we’re here to add value to whatever the player wants to do post graduation”, explains Deegan.
For the esports competitors at Harrisburg University, the period from January to June is the main season. Beyond this period, they compete in open tournaments during the fall semester. Time is also allotted for training, strategy, matches, and rest days.
Each September, Harrisburg University hosts an Esports Invitational called the HUE Fest. This event invites top teams from across the US to participate in various games.
These tournaments not only entertain game enthusiasts but also lure in potential patrons to local eateries, lifestyle stores, and other establishments in Harrisburg – adding a layer of economic impetus to the sport.
To increase community interactions, the HU Storm offers team merchandise, hosts open events, visits schools to promote gaming, and plans to organize camps and clinics for youngsters.
The HU Storm continues to expand its footprint. After starting five years ago with League of Legends, they have ventured into Valorant and Rocket League. They’re looking forward to their growth in these new games.
The team also takes steps to ensure inclusivity, having recently hired a female ex-student to be their assistant director and director of partnerships. She will be the first alumnus and the first woman to join the esports staff.
Moreover, a female player is joining their League of Legends team in the upcoming fall.
“Our ultimate goal is to ensure that everyone finds an opportunity at HU Storm, as long as they are committed to the game,” asserts Deegan.
He also hopes to foster an environment where children can harness their passion for esports, aspire to play professionally, and have full family support. Offering gaming clinics and camps, akin to mainstream sports, is part of this plan.
“Primarily, Esports is a platform that helps the younger generation develop essential life skills,” says Deegan.
