AMIR KHAN could be on the verge of making a boxing comeback.
The 36-year-old announced his retirement from the sport three months after his loss to Kell Brook in their February 2022 grudge match.
Khan’s performance was one of the worst of a long career that had many memorable nights in Great Britain and America. The former Olympic medallist was a shadow of his former self against Brook and had to endure punishment round after round before being stopped in the sixth round.
Speaking at a boxing event in Dubai this past weekend Khan had this to say about potentially lacing up the gloves once again.
“I think there’s gonna be a massive announcement in the next week or so.
“I might be coming back in the ring again. I might be fighting again. It’s not gonna be a small fight, it’ll be like a super fight as well.
“The deal was that big I couldn’t turn it down. So that’s why I’ll get myself back in the gym again, train again. It’ll be a massive fight. We’ve kept it very quiet at the moment.”
Over the years Khan campaigned for a bout against Floyd Mayweather and had been linked on more than one occasion to former stable-mate Manny Pacquiao. The Brit and the Filipino were both trained by Freddie Roach.
In April this year Khan was given a two-year suspension having failed a drug test for the banned substance ostarine. The performane enhancing drug was discovered after the fight against Brook. Khan said he had not taken it intentionally but accepted he broke anti-doping rules.
On the day the story broke Sky Sports News spoke to Khan about the revelation.
“I’ve never cheated. But I’ve got a two-year ban now, which is quite strange and funny because I’m already retired anyway.
“There’s no comeback planned at all. But I’ve never cheated, and I never will. That’s just not something I would do.”
The ban had been due to run until April 2024, but an independent panel has since accepted his argument that he had not intentionally taken the substance.
Khan could follow the route of Mayweather and move into exhibition fights beginning with Pacquiao who would fit the ‘super-fight’ description.
