Amazon MGM Studios Ventures Into Bringing Esports to a Wider Audience

Amazon MGM Studios plans to produce content revolving around Global Esports Games and professional esports athletes to connect mainstream audiences with the professional video gaming scene.

Barry Poznick, GM of MGM Alternative, says with the increasing global attention on esports, they are keen to share stories and thrills of Global Esport Games, their athletes, and the gaming lifestyle. This partnership with the Global Esports Federation will help create content that appeals to both gamers and non-gamers globally.

MGM Alternative, also known for producing other popular shows like SHARKTANK, SURVIVOR, and THE VOICE, aspires to replicate their success in the esports world.

With the esports industry globally being worth around $4.2 billion, the Global Esports Federation was established in 2019 to give esports the recognition they deserve and to promote their global prestige and credibility.

Paul J. Foster, CEO of Global Esports Federation, believes this partnership will highlight the diverse narratives of esports athletes globally. Together, Global Esports and MGM Alternative aims to offer a unique platform for the esports community’s growth and value worldwide.

Like the Olympics, Global Esports Games, the core focus of MGM Alternative’s programming, gathers world-class gamers to represent their countries. Previous year’s event saw over 950 athletes from more than 100 countries competing in four different games.

This year’s games will be held in China in December, with the games to be played yet to be announced.

Amazon’s MGM Studios, apart from investing in esports, has also been creating content for diverse audiences that are often not catered to by mainstream media. They recently announced a partnership with Jon Erwin to produce a new faith-based series.

Their first series under the partnership, HOUSE OF DAVID, will be produced for Prime Video. The plot revolves around King Saul’s downfall due to his pride and the rise of an outcast shepherd boy, David, destined to replace him. Despite being a secular company, Prime Video recognizes the successful track record of faith-based projects such as THE CHOSEN and SOUND OF FREEDOM, proving the wide audience interest in topics of faith warranting significant returns without substantial budgets.
