Insights from Ray Ng, the Head of MLBB Esports, About the Esports World Cup Collaboration

Question: Can you share your expectations from the MLBB Esports and Esports World Cup partnership? How do you think it will impact the global mobile esports and MLBB esports landscape?

Ray Ng: Thank you for your query and for the congratulatory message. Given that this is a three-year partnership, we foresee substantial growth for us and our ecosystem.

This is not a one-year deal; it symbolizes our commitment to the community that we’ll continue for several years. Having MLBB as one of the competing games under the Esports World Cup provides us with advanced engagement with a broader audience, which is exactly what we need.

MLBB already has a strong following in the East, including Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. However, there is a knowledge gap among Western audiences regarding mobile esports. If you examine the overall viewership of other mobile esports titles, the bulk of their viewers are from Asia, not the West.

This collaboration with the Esports World Cup will help introduce MLBB to a newer and broader Western audience, potentially leading to the formation of esports clubs and MLBB esports teams competing in the Esports World Cup.

I think this partnership is beneficial for both parties (Esports World Cup and MLBB), as we can help them expand their reach to the eastern audience. So it’s a win-win cooperation between MLBB Esports and the Esports World Cup.

Question: With Moonton also running some academic leagues to bolster the esports scene at the grassroots level, do you believe that the increased prize money at the Esports World Cup will enhance the competitive level in these MSC and MWI tournaments?

Ray Ng: These development leagues are incredibly important. With the grassroots level identifying and nurturing future stars in the esports scene, we can maintain the high level of competition in MLBB Esports.

This is crucial for fans, as they expect top players when they tune in to watch the tournament. We will focus on establishing a robust ecosystem beneficial for both men’s and women’s tournaments. Local teams are forming strategies on player recruitment to represent their regions in upcoming MWI tournaments, providing a growth pathway for local regions.

Question: MWI, which started in 2022, is relatively new to the MLBB esports scene. Can you comment on aspects of the tournament that need improvement and your plans regarding it?

MWI 2023 was hosted offline in Indonesia (Image via Moonton Games)

Ray Ng: The MWI series has been running for two years, and one of the significant improvements last year was hosting it offline in Indonesia. Moving forward, we aim to expand the platform to cover more countries and regions, helped by the MLBB Esports-Esports World Cup collaboration.

Our goal is to encourage esports teams from different regions to consider the women’s esports scene and help it grow by collaborating with their local partners. Ultimately, we want the top teams from each region to compete in the MWI series.

We are striving to establish a platform for local regions to help develop the local scene and attract the best talents. Indonesia is an excellent example of this, hosting their own women’s tournament. We are looking forward to seeing professional MPL teams create their own women’s teams in the future, although there are several steps to be taken for the women’s team to catch up.

Question: With 2023 seeing a significant increase in the viewership of regional tournaments and M championships, how positive are you about the upcoming esports season in 2024?

Ray Ng: We are very optimistic about viewership in the future. The diversity of our viewers is impressive, with fans from many different countries tuning into our streaming channels in various languages.

Even apart from Southeast Asia, viewing games in different languages has significantly boosted overall viewership numbers, indicating high potential for further growth of MLBB Esports as a global product.

So, there is a lot of untapped potential, and both the MLBB Esports and Moonton Esports teams are very positive about the future of Mobile Legends Esports.
