What is r/place on Reddit?

A resurgence of r/place activity has started, with a multitude of Reddit users rushing to the page to see what’s changed and what hasn’t. The legendary r/place platform centers around unity, group effort, and camaraderie, though achieving this is no simple feat.

Like every other Reddit page, multitudes of individuals sometimes converge on a single subreddit to engage in conversations about common interests. R/place operates on the same principle but incorporates an additional touch of creativity. The cooperative Reddit initiative initially started on April 1, 2017, spread outside the platform eventually, and is now back.

Understanding r/place and its usage

R/place is an individual subreddit which allows users to place a single pixel at the top of the Reddit page to create any image they want. The challenge is numerous other individuals are attempting to do so as well, and there’s a ‘no-pixel period’ after each pixel placed.

This ‘no-pixel period’ refers to a five-minute pause during which users cannot place any pixels on the r/place board. The total number of pixels you can place isn’t restricted, it’s all about the timing.

This marks the third occasion r/place has surfaced on Reddit. It was first introduced six years ago, reappeared on April Fools Day 2022, and is now back.

Individuals can also locate random communities scattered across the canvas. Reddit provides a ‘Scan for Communities’ feature that users can access by clicking on the ellipses found at the bottom of the canvas.

Almost instantly, people began utilizing the canvas as a platform to protest Reddit’s treatment of its moderators. The phrase “F*** Spez” pervades the new image, alluding to the Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman’s username, Spez.

Beyond providing a forum for expressing opinions, the canvas is expected to transform into a gallery of memes and national flags, as has been the case in previous years.
