What are Exotic Shards in Apex Legends?

What is the function of this fresh game currency?

In Apex Legends, leakers announce the arrival of a fresh in-game monetary form, recognized as Exotic Shards. This new currency is set to coexist with other forms of Apex currencies, including Apex Coins, Heirloom Shards, and Crafting Metals.

These new shards are associated with the new universal heirlooms, such as the Cobalt Katar. They are yet to be launched in Apex Legends, although here’s all the available details on Exotic Shards and their role in Apex Legends.

How can one acquire Exotic Shards in Apex Legends?

Upon their launch in Apex Legends, it appears that Exotic Shards can be obtained in two different manners. These new shards can be accessed from Apex Packs, or through direct purchases, differentiating them from Heirloom Shards, which can only be drawn from packs with a 1/500 chance.

Until the arrival of these shards, the purchasing cost or the probability of them showing in an Apex Pack is yet to be confirmed. However, expect them to be reasonably scarce, enticing players to opt for direct purchases.

What role will these Shards play?

Leaks have as well shed light on what the Exotic Shards will be used for in Apex Legends.

The new currency description reads as: “Acquire Exotic Shards to buy Artifact set items and reactive weapon skins.”

This seems to confirm an independent rumour, that the new Cobalt Katar universal Heirloom can be adjusted. Players could change this item’s colors and style via a variety of options to select from.

But that’s not all you can obtain with Exotic Shards. The description includes another revelation; for the first time in the game’s history, Reactive weapon skins will also be available for purchase. Until now it’s uncertain whether this includes all new Reactive weapon skins, recolors of past Battle Pass rewards, or a blend of both. There may even be a comeback of direct Battle Pass skins.

Season 10’s Reactive Volt skin

Of course, the most cost-effective way to unlock these skins continues to be by completing the Battle Pass so there’s no need to worry about missing out on a new Reactive skin each season in the future.

It’s currently not certain how many Exotic Shards the Heirloom customisations or Reactive weapon skins will need.
