Abdul Taib Rosli, the president of the Sibu Division Esport Association (SDESA), on October 8, expressed his desire for more resources to be allocated towards sports in the upcoming 2024 Budget.
He elaborated that the scope of the increase should cover both organizational funds and sports facilities.
According to him, esports are a popular choice among the youth and teenagers in Sarawak’s central region. However, the lack of appropriate infrastructure discourages them from practicing or participating in events.
Abdul Taib highlighted that many sports organizations and governing bodies struggle due to insufficient operational funding.
Hence, he supports the suggestion from the Ministry of Youth and Sports for parents or individuals who spend on sports training to receive tax deductions.
Hannah Yeoh, the Minister of Youth and Sports, reportedly stated that this suggestion is a focus area for her ministry in the Budget 2024 discussions with the Ministry of Finance (MoF).
Yeoh reportedly explained that they submitted the suggestion, but its approval is uncertain. At present, the taxation system only allows deductions for purchasing sports equipment.
The minister further noted that her department is considering including sports training fees in the lifestyle tax relief list for the 2024 Budget.
Abdul Taib argued that such tax exemptions could encourage both domestic and international investment in sporting events, positively impacting the economy.
Moreover, he mentioned that such an initiative could also foster a new generation of high-quality athletes, indirectly promoting health amongst youths and teenagers.
Abdul Taib also emphasized the need for the government to allocate more funds towards Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to stimulate economic growth by creating a skilled youth workforce.
In his view, the technology field in Sarawak has significant potential for career advancement and is keenly supported by the local government.
Additionally, Abdul Taib urged for an increased housing budget to construct more affordable and low-cost houses.
He noted that despite holding stable jobs, many young people are unable to purchase a home due to the uncertain economic climate and high housing prices.
At the same time, he suggested the 2024 Budget should focus on supporting young entrepreneurs by providing start-up capital and funds for skill enhancement.
Abdul Taib expressed his hope for Sarawak and Sabah to receive a development fund reflective of their status as founding members of the Federation of Malaysia.
He emphasized the need to improve infrastructure and facilities in both regions to attract foreign investors, thereby pushing Malaysia closer to becoming a developed nation.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister and Finance Minister, is scheduled to present the 2024 Budget at the Dewan Rakyat on October 13.
