Massachusetts residents and visitors on Tuesday may place legal bets on sports as the state takes its first step down another expanded gaming path.

The Legislature and former Gov. Deval Patrick legalized casinos in 2011 and the first casino opened in 2015.

The newest wagering opportunity, authorized under a summer 2022 law inked by Gov. Charlie Baker, has already permanently changed the way people talk about sports, and legalization is expected to cut into the illegal gambling market, steer money from those on the losing side of bets to casinos and mobile betting companies, and further line state coffers that have grown increasingly reliant in recent years on the gambling dollar.

While some households newly contemplate how much to set aside for sports betting, the Healey administration and House and Senate Democrats are due by Tuesday to estimate how much tax revenue they can conservatively expect to collect in the fiscal year that starts July 1.

The so-called consensus revenue agreement will lead to automatic revenue spinoffs for big-ticket spending areas like school construction, pensions and the MBTA, and give Administration and Finance Secretary Matt Gorzkowicz a big number to write into the governor’s first annual budget, which is due by March 1.

The facilities that will be allowed to offer in-person betting starting Tuesday include Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, MGM Springfield and Encore Boston Harbor in Everett.
