HisWattson announces retirement from competitive Apex Legends

Jacob ‘HisWattson’ McMillin, a seasoned Apex Legends pro, has confirmed his departure from the esport after a three-year involvement in competitive play.

HisWattson rose to fame for solo-queuing from Rookie to Predator without making use of any armor, and for rising from Bronze to Masters without the help of any resources while consistently ranking high in professional tournaments. Once, he boldly proclaimed himself as the finest Apex Legends player worldwide, and some of his accomplishments do support his claim.

The 21-year-old pro signed with FURIA before the ALGS World Championship 2022 and was crowned the MVP of the tournament. His team came out in second place and they earned a prize of $300,000.

Nonetheless, after three years of competition, the Apex professional has revealed his retirement from the esport.

HisWattson confirms his Apex Legends esports retirement

The Apex professional made a declaration on July 15, explaining his reasons for departing from competitive playing. “I’ve decided to quit Competitve Apex today,” he penned. “I moved from being a considerable distance ahead of the 2nd best player to being bad. I tried all possible methods to enjoy playing the competitions, but even when we were victors, I still wasn’t having fun.

“I’ve considered it from all perspectives, but I sincerely don’t believe it can make me happy. Gradually, my lack of enjoyment caused my skills to deteriorate to the point where I’m no longer satisfied and just yearn to return to what made me the greatest and the most joyful I’d ever been: Spamming ranked like a degen and being a goofball on stream.”

HisWattson proceeded to explain that neither his teammates nor his recent tournament performances influenced his retirement; instead he confessed that he had been feeling the desire to “progress” beyond competitive Apex for quite some time, but was repeatedly persuaded to keep playing.

“This is not because we’ve just performed poorly or there is any animosity towards my team,” he said. “Before Split 1 even opened and multiple times afterward, I wanted to move on but was swayed to continue playing each time. It’s virtually impossible for me to stay ahead in skills when I’m not giving my absolute best.

“It’s not fair to my teammates or those who want to witness my success, as they’re expecting my all when I can’t deliver it to them. Everyone at FURIA were incredible and I regret not deciding to retire earlier.”

He concluded by saying, “I’m going to remain with FURIA as a content creator. I’d like to say a big thank you to Pandxrz, Xera, and Sealion for being tremendous teammates during this journey, and a massive thank you to everyone who has supported my competitive adventures. I’m enormously grateful to all of you.”

HisWattson now plans to focus entirely on content creation, continuing to represent FURIA.
