Global Esports Games 2023: Hemanth Kommu to carry India’s medal hopes in eFootball

Hemanth Kommu, India’s top eFootball player, is set to show off his skills at the Global Esports Games 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, December 12-16, following his stellar performance in the Asian Qualifiers. His first game will be against Uruguay.

Known in the gaming world as ‘peshemak7,’ Kommu is part of Group D in the tournament’s group stage, where he’ll face competitors from Brazil, Iran, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and Uruguay. All the group stage games will occur on December 13, following a Round Robin best-of-three format. In total, 28 players will battle it out in four groups of seven, with the top three players from each group moving on to the Round of 16 playoffs.

Two exciting features of the tournament are the last-chance qualifier, where each group’s fourth-placed player during Stage 1 gets a shot at qualification, and the final stage that sees only one player qualifying. The final stage will utilize a Single Elimination best-of-three format.

Kommu, a alum of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), navigated his way to qualification with notable wins against tough opponents in the Asian qualifiers, such as Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. His slot in the qualifiers was secured after his triumph in the 2023 National Esports Championships, hosted earlier this year by the Esports Federation of India (ESFI).

The Global Esports Games is a multi-title competition featuring four major games: DOTA 2, Street Fighter 6, eFootball 2024, and PUBG Mobile. The games will see the participation of over 250 athletes from more than 50 countries and territories worldwide.
