The European teams had a heartbreaking showing at League of Legends Worlds 2022. G2 Esports, one of the best teams from the League of Legends European Championship (LEC), exited the tournament after a disappointing performance at the Group Stage where it went 1-5. G2 Esports had a seemingly good year in its region where it won the Spring Split and became the runner-up during the Summer, losing to Rogue. However, the management has now decided to make changes to the roster heading into the offseason, in an attempt to build a perfect team for the 2023 season. Reports have already suggested that two of G2 Esports’ star players have been allowed to explore their options.
G2 Esports GM Romain comments on the team’s future
G2 Esports League of Legends’ General Manager Romain Bigeard to reflect on the team’s performance on the international stage and talked about what to expect in the future. He acknowledged that it was a disappointing year for the western fans at Worlds and that a team of five hard-working LEC players with great team spirit was not enough to put up a fight against the teams from the League of Legends Pro League (LPL) and the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK). He noted that G2 Esports will be going back to the drawing board after a sub-par three-week performance.
Bigeard promised that G2 Esports would build the best possible team. He added, “We’re investing a lot of resources to make this happen. We will do everything in our power to build and keep the lineup we genuinely believe has the biggest level of potential to successfully fight through the 10 months of [the] tournament.”
Additionally, he said that the season will be intense, beautiful, and unforgiving. “We will give everything for the only thing which matters in competitive League of Legends: win the Worlds Championship. See you in 2023!”
G2 Esports’ roster for 2023
According to Brieuc Seeger aka LEC Wooloo, G2 Esports is looking to replace jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski and attack-damage carry (ADC) Victor “Flakked” Lirola Tortosa. The two players have reportedly been allowed to explore their options.
In the Summer Split, G2 finished first in the regular season but coming into the Summer, it failed to defend and retain its title against Rogue. At Worlds 2022, G2 Esports was seeded alongside JD Gaming, Damwon KIA, and Evil Geniuses in Group B. However, the team managed to win only one game in the six games that it played.
Jankos moving onto a different team will officially mark the end of a golden era of G2 Esports, with only Rasmus “caPs” Borregaard Winther holding the reins as a long-time G2 player. Jankos joined G2 Esports in 2017 and has been crucial in all the successes the team tasted both internationally and domestically.
