Scott Hollas from Fort William and Prof Donald Bloxham from Edinburgh have shared their cautionary tales about the dangers of parents’ races at school sports day. Hollas injured his leg and had to take a week off work after tearing ligaments when he took part in the dads’ race at his daughter’s school, while Bloxham ended up in an ambulance and had three weeks off work after sustaining hamstring injuries. Both men warn that the pressure to perform can be intense, but that it’s important to remember that it’s all about fun and not about winning. Hollas’ school has abandoned the dads’ race in favour of more gentle events such as the egg-and-spoon or sack race.
