54th Massachusetts Infantry to

be Civil War Roundtable topic

WHEELING — The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will present the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry during its monthly meeting on Monday in the auditorium of the Ohio County Public Library, located at 52 16th St., Wheeling.

The program, beginning at 6:30 p.m., will be presented by Pete Chacalos and will detail events involved in the raising of the historic regiment as well as its movements and engagements during the war. The 54th was immortalized in the 1989 film “Glory” starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. It was the first black regiment raised in the northern states east of the Mississippi. The 54th had a distinguished record from its inception through the end of the war but is best remembered for its ill-fated assault on Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863.

Chacalos is a graduate of Wheeling Park High School, West Virginia University and Ohio University. Now retired after a 35-year teaching career, Chacalos was a national board-certified teacher, educator of the year for the 2018-19 school year and Wheeling Chamber of Commerce teacher of the year.

An amateur historian specializing in Civil War history, Chacalos recently published his first book, “Born of Rebellion: West Virginia and the Civil War.” Chacalos is the vice president of the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable and serves on the board of education of Ohio County. He also serves on the board of the West Virginia Independence Hall Foundation and was recognized as a West Virginia History Hero in 2022.
