After a lengthy wait, it was announced today that Chris Billam-Smith will be defending his WBO Cruiserweight title against mandatory challenger Richard Riakporhe this summer.
The fight is scheduled for June 15 at Selhurst Park, the home ground of Riakporhe’s favorite football team Crystal Palace FC. The event will be part of a Boxxer promotion and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. Billam-Smith, with a record of 19-1 (13), will not only defend his title for the second time but also have the opportunity to avenge his previous loss to Riakporhe, who boasts a record of 17-0 (13).
The two fighters last met five years ago on the undercard of Dillian Whyte vs. Oscar Rivas at the O2 Arena in London. It was a closely contested match where Riakporhe emerged victorious with a split decision from judges Leszek Jankowiak, Salvador Silva, and Terry O’Connor. Since then, both fighters have continued their unbeaten streaks, with Billam-Smith securing notable wins against opponents like Tommy McCarthy, Isaac Chamberlain, and Lawrence Okolie.
Riakporhe, on the other hand, has been on a winning streak, defeating fighters such as Jack Massey, Olanrewaju Duradola, and Deion Jumah. With his powerful punching and impressive performances, he has gained recognition in the boxing world.
Plans for the rematch between Billam-Smith and Riakporhe were finalized recently, with the venue being a key consideration. Both fighters expressed their desire to compete at the O2 Arena once again, where their first encounter took place.
Billam-Smith, confident in his fan base and ticket-selling abilities, anticipates a successful defense of his title against Riakporhe, who will have the chance to prove himself in front of his home crowd on June 15.
