Betty Lou (Irons) Matz

Betty Lou (Irons) Matz, age 86, passed away Oct. 9 2022, at the Fairview Senior Living Home in Hudson, New Hampshire. Betty was the daughter of the late Ervin Irons and Ivy Beatrice Valentine (South). Betty was the wife of the late John Mewhinney, and then the loving wife of late Bernhard (Richard) Matz.

Betty was energetic and a hard worker. A few of her careers included a dental hygienist in her early years and then she worked as a technical support specialist at Raytheon Marine for many years. Betty belonged to many organizations throughout her years, including sororities, PTAs, book clubs, a golf member, and even a Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed gatherings with her family, friends and neighbors.

Betty and her husband, Bernhard (Dick), enjoyed golfing and skiing together. For more than 37 years, the first week in March was devoted to the family ski vacation at Mittersill Resort in New Hampshire. Four generations enjoyed the sport together. They also enjoyed sailing for 19 years in their 31-foot Pearson sailboat, “Finally”, at Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Along with sailing friends, they had numerous trips from Rhode Island to Maine. Betty would remark all the time that sailing was some of the nicest times in her life.

She was a devoted mother of four children. She leaves behinds her loving daughters, Kim Cunningham and Ted Wardenchi of New Jersey and Julia Robin of California; her son, Greg Mewhinney, of New Hampshire, and the late Richard Matz (predeceased 2017) of New Hampshire; grandchildren, Gail and Willie Pelly of New Jersey, Norm Matthew and Cathy Cunningham of Washington, Naomi and Shaun Orcutt of New Jersey, and Chelsea Matz of New Hampshire; great-grandchildren, Stefani and Justin Baptist of New Jersey, Matthew Pelly of New Jersey, and Allison and Keira Cunningham of Washington, and Christopher Orcutt of New Jersey; great-great grandchildren, Madelyn Rose Mary and Margo Josephine Baptist. Betty had two sisters, Pearl Schraeder, married to Jim of Washington, and the predeceased Margarete (Margie) Schlecht, married to Kenneth of Arizona. She also has many nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation at the DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, One Lock St., Nashua, N.H. 03064 on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, from 2-5 p.m. Interment will be private.
