PHOENIX — Sophomore Carsyn Gallegos scored all three goals for the Phoenix girls soccer team, which was able to hold off Mazama, 3-2, and snap a five-game losing streak to capture its first Skyline Conference victory Monday at Phoenix-Talent Rising Stadium.
“She played a great game and she was kind of unstoppable today,” Phoenix coach Stephanie Vandenbusch said of Gallegos. “She put on a show and she was the person we were trying to get the ball to and we were able to look to her at the finish.”
Gallegos tallied in the 37th minute to provide the Pirates (3-7, 1-4 Skyline) with a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Vikings (2-5-1, 2-2-1) responded by tying the game 1-all just three minutes into the second half but in the 55th minute Gallegos put the Pirates ahead for good with a goal on an assist from Anahi Villa. Gallegos completed her hat trick in the 66th minute on a penalty kick that give her squad a 3-1 cushion.
Mazama cut Phoenix’s lead to 3-2 at the 70-minute mark but the Pirates’ backline, led by senior captain and centerback Ruby Rector, were able to keep the Vikings at bay.
Filling in for injured junior goalkeeper Jayden Vos, freshman Addison McConnell provided the Pirates with six saves.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 6, COQUILLE 4: At Coquille, Autumn Murray tallied two goals as Cascade Christian used four second-half scores to overcome a slow start and collect a District 4 win.
After Coquille broke the ice with a score in the fifth minute, the senior Murray tied the game at 1-all with her goal in the 25th minute. Three minutes later, Murray set up Ellie Vanlandingham’s score to put the Challengers (4-6-1, 4-5-1 Dist. 4) ahead 2-1.
With the score tied at 2-all in the second half, Bella Williams’ corner kick found the back of the net in the 50th minute, three minutes before Murray connected again to give the Challengers some breathing room with a 4-2 lead.
The Challengers’ Aubrey Hess and Taylor Folin both scored clean up goals in the 63rd and 67th minutes, collecting deflected shot attempts from Emma Coats.
Defensively, freshman Mae Ferreira provided outstanding defensive work as a captain of the backline.
Coquille’s record fell to 0-10 overall and in league play.
Boys
PHOENIX 8, MAZAMA 0: At Klamath Falls, senior Danny Palomino connected on a career-high four goals to help Phoenix secure its fourth win in five games.
Palomino scored at the fourth-, 15-, 17- and 48-minute marks. He dribbled and scored two of the goals on his own while the other two were assisted by Isai Pinon.
The Pirates (4-5-1, 4-1 Skyline Conference) also picked up a pair of goals from Ethan Martinez — one on an assist from Antonio Camargo and the other scored on his own corner kick.
Palomino also assisted on Adolfo Carmacho’s score in the 16th minute and Jenner Selden converted on a header off of a corner kick from Tanner Norris in the 39th minute.
The loss dropped Mazama to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in Skyline.
