PORTLAND — Crater sophomore Josiah Tostenson only ran the first mile of Thursday night’s 5,000-meter run at the Crater Twilight due to what he had going the next day.
With a quick turnaround and a trip up to Portland, Tostenson showed no ill effects.
Tostenson placed sixth with a time of 16 minutes, 5.5 seconds in a deep field at the second annual Rose City Championship Invitational at Rose City Golf Course on Friday afternoon.
Milwaukie senior Logan Law — who finished in fifth, three spots behind Tostenson, at last year’s Class 5A state cross-country meet — won the race in 15:17.2. Law just edged out Lincoln senior Samy Anderson (15:17.5), while West Salem junior Jack Meier (15:42.4) and Central Catholic senior Wesley Shipsey (15:53.8) were third and fourth, respectively.
Tostenson was the lone Crater runner to compete in Friday’s race.
Thursday night’s mile-long run was Tostenson’s first competitive outing in nearly a month. The plan going in was always for him to run the first mile alongside senior teammate Tyrone Gorze, who was attempting to become just the ninth ever high school runner to run a sub-14-minunte time in a 5,000-meter race.
Tostenson ran just in front of Gorze for virtually the entire mile before pulling off to the right down the backstretch as he ended his run.
In Friday’s race, Tostenson finished just a tenth of a second ahead of Central Catholic senior Charlie Black, who finished in 16:05.6. Tostenson was three seconds ahead of Black at the 3-mile split, and held him off down the final stretch to secure sixth place.
