The seventh edition of The Match is upon us. Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are facing Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas under the lights Saturday at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida. Competing for the benefit of Hurricane Ian relief efforts, the four men who finished atop the PGA Tour’s 2022 Player Impact Program will once again take center stage.
Woods is the lone player from this quartet to have previously competed in The Match, but he has not been part of the event since the second edition when he and Peyton Manning took down Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady. There will be no NFL superstars or NBA legends on the course this time — though Charles Barkley will be on the broadcast — which means the golf itself is likely to be the best in The Match’s history. All four players have reached world No. 1 at various points in their career with McIlroy currently occupying the top spot. All are multi-time major winners who possess double-digit victory totals on the PGA Tour.
While this 12-hole match is labeled as an exhibition, it may still answer questions about the game’s current landscape. How will Tiger look in his first competitive appearance since The 150th Open in July? Will Thomas truly trash talk with the best of them? How entertaining will Spieth be while mic’d up? Is there a discernible gap between McIlroy and some of the other big names in the sport?
