Manistique remains undefeated | News, Sports, Jobs

MANISTIQUE — It would nearly be an understatement to say the Manistique volleyball team has been on a roll this season.

The Emeralds remained undefeated dual meets here Tuesday night, sweeping Negaunee in three sets in a Mid-Peninsula Conference match.

“We’re off to a good start,” coach Amy Nixon said after Manistique’s 3-0 victory at Ishpeming Westwood Sept. 29. “We’re looking forward to going to Indian River Inland Lakes in October. “There will be a lot of good competition down there. We want to get down there and see that kind of competition.”

Senior outside hitter Nora Cunningham served for four aces in the Emeralds’ 25-15, 25-9, 25-9 conquest at Westwood.

“Serving is one of our strengths,” she said. “We make it a priority. When we serve well, good things happen. Coming back when we face adversity in a set is also a strength for us. We always want to play hard competition and show who were are. Being able to overcome adversity has been a highlight to our season. That shows the fight this team has.”

Junior setter Emma Jones collected 26 assists and senior back-up Kelsey Muth added 11 against the Patriots.

“I have a lot of responsibility as a setter,” said Jones. “I set up all the plays (in a 5-1 offense), but I definitely can’t do it without my teammates. I think our communication has gotten better during the season.
