JAIME MUNGUIA will make his return to the ring on September 20th, this time with a new promoter in his corner.
In a surprising announcement by ESPN, the Mexican super-middleweight has teamed up with Top Rank in a multi-fight co-promotional deal, parting ways with Zanfer and Golden Boy Promotions.
Munguia, who suffered a loss in his last fight against fellow Mexican and undisputed 168lbs champion Canelo Alvarez, will be facing Erik Bazinyan on September 20th. Additionally, the 27-year-old will no longer be working with Freddie Roach as his trainer, opting instead to reunite with former four-weight world champion Erik Morales.
This move is a significant setback for Golden Boy Promotions and promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who have been working with Munguia since his first world title fight in May 2018. His victory over Sadam Ali secured him the WBO super-welterweight championship, the only world title he has held so far in his career, which has also seen him compete at middleweight from 2020 to 2022.
Munguia’s notable wins include a victory against Sergiy Derevyanchenko 13 months ago, followed by a ninth-round stoppage win against John Ryder in January.
His only defeat came in May during the fight against Canelo, where the undisputed champion emerged victorious by unanimous decision, with Munguia going down in the fourth round.
Top Rank previously signed a co-promotional deal with rising contender Christian Mbilli in the super-middleweight division. The Frenchman, born in Cameroon, scored a first-round knockout against Mark Heffron in May and will be fighting Derevyanchenko on August 17th. If both Mbilli and Munguia succeed in their upcoming fights, a potential clash between the two fighters could happen towards the end of 2024 or sometime in 2025.
