Garcia confirms to trainer why he couldn’t continue against Davis

In amongst the aftermath of Gervonta Davis v Ryan Garcia there were questions surrounding ‘KingRy’ because of how the fight ended.

Having recovered from a second-round knockdown Garcia competed until round seven when a whipping left body shot from Davis put his opponent down for a second time. Referee Thomas Taylor administered the count, but the fallen fighter could not make it up in time and got back on his feet just after 10.

Sadly, the word “quitter” was used by some boxing fans accusing Garcia of not wanting to carry on. With cameras and microphones all around the ring for a fight which transcended the sport viewers of Showtime’s All Access series were given a chance to hear an immediate post-fight conversation.

With Davis celebrating in one corner Garcia was briefly quizzed by Goossen which can be seen in the Epilogue episode now available on YouTube. The veteran cornerman asked his charge about the punch which ended the contest.

“Did it hit that rib part at all, Ryan?

“Yeah,” Garcia replied.

“I knew it.”

“I didn’t want to continue because of my rib.”

“Listen, let me just tell you something. That type of shot is a hard one. You’d rather get hit on the chin. And you did and you got up.”

Garcia has now suffered three knockdowns in his career. Two against Davis and one when Luke Campbell dropped him during their January 2021 encounter.
