Emory’s Annual Women’s Sports & Wellness Conference promotes the power of female athletics

Emory’s Fifth Annual Women’s Sports & Wellness Conference and Health Summit will take place on Saturday, August 12 providing a forum to learn and discuss topics most relevant and impactful for female athletes.

The full-day event will be held at the Emory University School of Medicine, 100 Woodruff Circle, Atlanta, GA 30322 and will feature more than 30 expert speakers and thought leaders in the field of women’s athletics. Virtual registration is also available.

The goal of the conference is to empower women and girls through sport and exercise. New this year will be a featured session on diversity, equity, and inclusion in sports, which will include discussions around why DEI in sports matters, the history of women in sports, current NCAA policies on transgender athletes, navigating mental health medications and sports, and adaptive athletes. The keynote address will be given by Dr. Markesha Henderson, associate professor and Executive Director of Sports Strategic Planning at Clark Atlanta University speaking on, ‘The Invisible Woman in Sports: Strategies for Being Seen and Heard.’

Sports and athletics have the power to move society forward,” says Courtney Gleason, MD, programming director for Emory’s Women’s Sports and Wellness Conference and director of Emory’s Female Athlete Program. “Diversity, equity, and inclusion in sports liaisons to DEI in other facets of personal, professional, and societal experiences. This conference serves as a platform for furthering education and discussion on these and other important topics pertaining to female athletes.

Additionally, the conference will include presentations from health care professionals across medical disciplines who will discuss current topics in sports medicine, including focused discussion on topics from pickleball and tennis elbow to the pregnant and post-partum athlete, the latest consensus recommendations on concussions, and considerations for nutrition and hydration for optimizing sports performance. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of sports injuries commonly seen in adult and young female athletes and will learn about the most up-to-date therapeutic interventions to optimize recovery and prevent re-injury.

The conference is designed for medical professionals as well as community participants: physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, sports dietitians, sports psychologists, school administrators, young and adult female athletes, coaches, parents, and all those interested in the important topic of female athletes. Continuing educational credits are available for those within the medical field. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to join the conversation.
