Cody Crowley reportedly out of July 13 fight against Jaron Ennis

THE July 13 homecoming for Jaron Ennis in Philadelphia requires a new opponent, as reported.

Ennis, the current IBF welterweight champion, is set to make his ring return in just under six weeks but his planned opponent, mandatory challenger Cody Crowley, is unable to compete due to failing a pre-fight eye exam. This news is particularly disappointing for Crowley, who underwent emergency double eye surgery last year.

Ennis’s new promotional team, Matchroom, is now searching for a suitable replacement for his first defence of the IBF welterweight world title at Wells Fargo Centre.

Ennis responded to the news early this morning (UK time) with a post on Twitter, stating, “If it’s Cody or not I will still be fighting a top contender on July 13 as planned! DONT WORRY!”

Matchroom and Eddie Hearn have not yet commented on the situation, with no response from Hearn when approached by Boxing News. However, they did recently announce the undercard for the July 13 event, which includes WBC Female featherweight champion Skye Nicolson defending her title against Dyana Vargas, as well as a 10-round welterweight contest between Jalil Major Hackett and Peter Dobson, Hearn’s newest American signing.
