PREP FOOTBALL

Springfield 14, MCW 8

SHERBURN — Springfield held off Martin County West 14-8 on Thursday in Southwest District football game.

MCW started the game with a 75-yard kickoff return for a TD by Cody Potts before the Tigers could answer back in the second quarter on a 9-yard TD run by Brayden Sturm. Tied at 8-all, Springfield was able to take the lead with 15 seconds left when Ashtin Johnson capped off a long drive with a 1-yard TD run.

After a short kickoff, MCW got a long pass to the Springfield 4-yard line, but the Tigers held MCW out of the end zone on the last two plays of the game.

Johnson led the Tigers with 115 yards rushing, while Sturm had 41 yards rushing and 107 yards passing. Carter Olson had six catches for 70 yards.

The Springfield defense was led by James Filzen’s eight tackles, while Ashton Toll had eight tackles and a forced fumble, which was recovered by Johnson. Johnson and Sam Rummel each had a sack also, while Sturm had two interceptions.

GFW 50, WEM 12

WATERVILLE — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop cruised to a 50-12 win over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Thursday night in a Mid Southeast football game.

GFW was led by Nick TenEyck’s nine carries for 110 yards and a touchdown, while Rex Monson had 11 carries for 70 yards and a TD and Jacob Rose had nine carries for 69 yards and two TDs. Dylan Berstein added a 58-yard TD run for GFW also, while Garret Schmidt had five carries for 30 yards and a score.

Alex Johnson led the GFW defense with seven tackles and two sacks, while Schmidt and Justin Messner each had five tackles. Ashton Buboltz and Jake Hiles each had a sack also for the Thunderbirds’ defense.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Wabasso 3,

Redwood Valley 2

REDWOOD FALLS — Wabasso defeated Redwood Valley 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-11 on Thursday afternoon in a nonconference volleyball match.

Avery Carlson led the Rabbits with 12 kills, 18 digs and three aces, while Natasha Doubler had 12 kills and Alivia Olson had 11 kills. Audrey Johnson added 22 digs for Wabasso, while Kelsey Frank had 34 set assists and 15 digs.

Wabasso (16-7) hosts Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Tuesday.

Sibley East 3, TCU 1

ARLINGTON — Sibley East topped Tri-City United 25-23, 18-25, 25-14, 25-22 on Thursday night in a Minnesota River Conference volleyball match.

Jessica Wolter led Sibley East with 15 kills, 10 digs and four aces, while Anna Harens had 20 set assists, 10 kills, seven digs and four aces and Elizabeth Sell had seven kills. Also for the Wolverines, Lydia Kranz had 16 digs, while Karcyn Dose had seven kills and six digs, Lainey Brandt had 21 set assists, nine aces and four kills, Sami Petzel had 11 digs and Mara Latzke had three aces.

Sibley East (8-13, 2-3) is at the Bloomington Jefferson tournament on Saturday.

GIRLS TENNIS

New Ulm competes in Section 2AA Individuals

ST. PETER — New Ulm competed in the Section 2AA Individual Tournament on Thursday at Gustavus Adolphus College.

In singles action, New Ulm’s Calyn Glaser fell to St. Peter’s Zetta Haugen (6-3, 6-4), while New Ulm’s Lydia King was defeated by Mankato East/Loyola’s Sydney Jacobs (6-3, 6-0). In doubles action, New Ulm’s Katie Wilker and Emily Pearson fell to Jordan’s Jade Thach and Maddie Olinger (6-0, 6-1), while New Ulm’s Kate Frauenholtz and Karson Schmid fell to Prior Lake’s Rose Netz and Olivia Newman (6-1, 6-1).
