In the Division II state semifinals at Firestone Stadium in Akron, senior ace Jules King pitched perfectly for 6 1/3 innings and Big Red appeared to be on its way to its first state final appearance in program history with a 1-0 lead. However, Canfield’s offense finally broke through in the seventh inning, scoring two runs to defeat Big Red 2-1. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Big Red head coach Gus DiMarzio expressed pride in his team’s remarkable run and commended King’s performance, in which she fanned 10 batters to surpass the 700-career strikeout mark. The loss marks the departure of four seniors from Big Red’s historic team, but the team’s youth and promising underclassmen offer hope for future success. Canfield will face Tallmadge in the state championship on Saturday.
