Pedestrian killed in Reno | News, Sports, Jobs

RENO — A pedestrian was killed Saturday night while crossing Ohio 7 near Sand Hill Road in Reno, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.

The patrol’s Marietta Post received a call at 9:31 p.m. that a motor vehicle struck a pedestrian on Ohio 7, according to a press release from the post.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Thomas E. Sharretts, 71, of Marietta, was attempting to cross the state route when he was struck by a southbound 2007 Mercedes-Benz C-Class driven by Robert Francis, 53, of Newport.

Sharretts was transported by Reno EMS to Marietta Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, the Highway Patrol reported.

Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the crash, and no charges were mentioned in the release.

At the time of the crash, Sharretts was wearing dark clothing and was not crossing at the intersection, the Highway Patrol reported.

The patrol reminds pedestrians and motorists:

∫ Do not be distracted by electronic devices that takes one’s eyes and ears off the road.

∫ Pedestrians should wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night.

∫ Pedestrians should cross where motorists expect them to, follow pedestrian signs and signals and never assume a driver can see you.

∫ Motorists are required to yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk and in unmarked crosswalks at intersections.

∫ Motorists can use bright headlights when legally able to illuminate the roadway and possibly spot a pedestrian walking near the roadway.

∫ Motorists should slow down and drive cautiously in residential areas.
