Offer made to Dillian Whyte for August 12 rematch against Anthony Joshua

DILLIAN WHYTE is set to receive an opportunity to seek revenge against Anthony Joshua in August.

However, Whyte must first accept an offer made by AJ’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, which was sent to him over the weekend.

The two heavyweights previously faced off in a heated match in December 2015, with bragging rights and the British title at stake. At the time, Joshua had fought 14 times while Whyte had fought two more times. Their long-standing amateur rivalry dated back to 2009 when Whyte won by points, having knocked Joshua down in the first round.

Despite Joshua’s more polished and powerful performance, stopping Whyte in seven rounds, a melee ensued in the first round when both threw punches after the bell, hinting at a future rematch.

Now, Hearn has confirmed that they are waiting for Whyte’s response to a weekend offer; “Dillian has a lot of value in the rematch,” he added.

“This is a big fight between two world-class heavyweight and huge British names, though it’s not an opponent for Joshua. The negotiations will be difficult but both AJ and Whyte want the fight.”

However, should Joshua win, his next fight will likely be against Deontay Wilder in Saudi Arabia in December. “Our plan, which we’ve stressed, is for AJ to box on 12 August and in December again against Deontay,” says Hearn.
