Newcastle strengthened their grip on a Champions League place in midweek, and they will be looking to move further clear this weekend. There will also be pressure on Southampton, as they will need maximum points in their battle against relegation.
Premier League Preview
Newcastle look almost certain to end their 20-year wait for a Champions League campaign this term, as they sit seven points clear of Tottenham with a game in hand. The Magpies have enjoyed an excellent campaign under Eddie Howe, as they have landed 17 wins from their 32 games, and have suffered just four defeats. The Toon also come into this match after an excellent 4-1 win on the road against Everton in midweek.
Newcastle has excelled in matches against teams starting the day in the bottom three of the Premier League standings, as they have lost just once in 22. That defeat came back in 2021 against Sheffield United. However, they have remained unbeaten across all 12 matches against teams in the relegation places at St James’ Park.

Southampton’s time in the Premier League looks to be coming to an end, as they remain bottom of the standings. They are now cut adrift from safety, as they are six points away from Nottingham Forest. The Saints were dealt a killer blow in their previous match, as they suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Bournemouth in midweek.
That defeat means that they have now suffered more defeats than any other side in the Premier League, while they have landed a league-low of six victories. They have also struggled in clashes against teams in the top four places in recent seasons, as they are winless in 18. However, that trend was nearly broken last week, as they were pegged back late in the game to draw 3-3 against Arsenal.
Newcastle vs Southampton Head to Head
Newcastle has an excellent record against the Saints, as they have lost just one of the previous eleven. Their record is even stronger at St James’ Park, as Southampton has managed to record just one victory in their previous 17 visits.
Newcastle vs Southampton Prediction
Southampton looked a side destined for the drop in midweek, and another nail in their coffin will come on Sunday. We fully expect Newcastle to build on their straightforward win in midweek with a third straight success in the league against the Saints.
