Jack Catterall not interested in rematch with Ohara Davies

THERE seems to be little desire from Jack Catterall to face Ohara Davies again.

The two super-lightweights from Britain faced each other in October 2018, with Catterall coming out as the clear winner through unanimous decision.

Since then, both boxers have taken different paths to reach the top of the 140lbs division.

Catterall, who has been inactive, defeated three underwhelming opponents before giving a great performance against Josh Taylor early last year, but after an egregious decision was awarded to the Scot in Glasgow, Catterall suffered a defeat. Just last weekend, Catterall made his Matchroom debut with a strong 10-round performance against Darragh Foley.

Davies has been unbeaten in seven fights since losing to “El Gato.” This includes a lucky victory against Miguel Vazquez, as well as a career-best win against Lewis Ritson in his most recent fight.

The Londoner seems to be on the verge of getting a shot at Rolando Romero and his world title. Catterall’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has mentioned that should neither fighter land the big fights they are going after, then he would like to make the Davies fight happen.

“I don’t think Rolly will fight him, if I’m being honest,” Catterall told Boxing News.

“I think Rolly will vacate the belt, and Ohara will probably box for a vacant title. I don’t see the big interest in that fight happening, but you know what? If he gets the world title shot, I think Ohara can beat him. You know what? I wish him all the best for that fight.”

Romero has talked about the potential pay-per-view money spinner against Ryan Garcia, who is now in the 10 stone mix after losing to Gervonta Davis at 136lbs. However, the WBA has ordered Romero to defend his title against Davies. Both teams have until June 29 to reach a deal, or the fight will go to purse bids.

If Davies emerges with the title over his shoulder, then and only then, would Catterall be interested in fighting “Two Tanks” for a second time.

“The only time I would fight Ohara Davies [is] if there was a world title on the line,” he informed BN.

“That fight really doesn’t interest me. I probably beat him in first gear last time, and it wasn’t the most interesting fight, but if there was a world title on the line, then it’s definitely something we could consider.”
