Esports casters respond to AI commentator bot on social media: “Truly depressing”

An AI has made its way into the esports industry as a social media profile that leverages AI shared a video of AI delivering a narrative throughout a League of Legends game.

Esports commentators and enthusiasts were startled as an X account released a video exploiting the latest OpenAI tools to formulate commentary over a League of Legends encounter.

The AI anchor conducted narration for the T1 vs. LNG Esports League of Legends Worlds 2023 competition and narrated the game state as well as game strategies like vision.

The esports community has mostly shown a negative or indifferent response. Esports and gaming supporters have been skeptical about breakthrough technologies such as blockchain, NFTs, and AI, and this case is no exception.

Many supporters dubbed the AI narrator as lacking in enthusiasm and vitality, calling the bot “unlike a human”.

Esports narrators, who seem to be the subsequent target of AI taking over, were also displeased with the implications of the new AI bot.

Mitch ‘Ubershouts’ Leslie, one of the most veteran commentators in esports, used this opportunity to jest about the grim state of the industry in response to the AI bot.

“Ayo narrators y’all imagined a 60% salary reduction was the least of your troubles?” he said.

Sean ‘Spaceman’ Rogers, an esports commentator for Call of Duty, Halo, and Rocket League, referred to AI as at best an imitation, and at worst, theft.

“Dispose of it where it’s due,” wrote Rogers.

Currently, there doesn’t seem to be any apprehension on the part of the narrators, as the bot doesn’t seem ready to replace them just yet.

Whether an esports event manager will take the chance and invest resources in developing an AI commentator is yet to be determined.
