According to Eddie Hearn, Israil Madrimov is considered the top super-welterweight in the world, but he acknowledges that his fighter is facing a formidable opponent in Terence Crawford.
Madrimov, with a record of 10-0-1 (7), is set to defend his WBA world title against Crawford at the BMO Stadium on August 3. This event, part of Riyadh Season in America, has brought together multiple promoters, allowing fighters like Andy Ruiz, Jarrell Miller, David Morrell, Andy Cruz, Tim Tszyu, Vergil Ortiz Jr, and Isaac Cruz to compete on the same card.
In the headline bout, pound-for-pound leader Terence Crawford, boasting a record of 40-0 (31), is aiming for a world title in his fourth weight class. Having already conquered one belt at lightweight, four at super-lightweight, and four at welterweight, the skilled Nebraskan now seeks success in the super-welterweight division.
“I truly believe Madrimov is the best 154-pounder in the world,” Hearn stated to Boxing News following the press conference in New York. “Terence Crawford immediately sought out all the champions. With His Excellency’s involvement, we secured this major fight as the main event on a significant card. However, I cautioned him, ‘Every fighter inevitably ages, every fighter eventually moves up one weight class too many’.”
Hearn is naturally advocating for his fighter, highlighting Madrimov’s strengths before acknowledging the caliber of their opponent.
“Madrimov showcases exceptional footwork, elusiveness, solid defense, and powerful punching, but we recognize that we are facing the pound-for-pound number one. Crawford is a genius in the ring. Having been undisputed at lightweight and welterweight, he now pursues undisputed status at super-welterweight. He may be remembered as the greatest fighter of our generation.
“It’s a pleasure to collaborate with Terence once again,” Hearn added. “He caused heartbreak for us with Ricky Burns in Glasgow years ago. He shattered our hopes against Julius Indongo to achieve undisputed status, and now it’s our turn to challenge him.”
