This has been an extremely rare poor start to the Bundesliga season for Bayern Munich, as they come into this fixture against Bayer Leverkusen sitting five points off the top spot in the Germany-top-flight. Their recent form has also been extremely slow, as they have failed to win in their previous four fixtures in the league, and were handed a first defeat of the season in their previous fixture.
That defeat came against Augsburg away from home, as they were beaten 1-0. It was telling of the struggles that Bayern have endured throughout the early weeks of the season in the final third, as they very rarely looked like creating much by way of a clear goalscoring opportunity. Bayern will be hoping that the international break has helped refocus their efforts ahead of a crucial period of the season before the World Cup break in November.
Bayer Leverkusen has endured an even slower start to the season in the Bundesliga, as they come into this fixture level on points with two of the three sides occupying the bottom three positions in the standings. Leverkusen has won just once in seven fixtures this season, and are winless in their previous three.
However, unlike Bayern, they were able to avoid defeat in their most recent fixture in the Bundesliga, as they played out a 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen. The Leverkusen goal in that draw was scored by Kerem Demirbay, but Werder struck their equaliser with just eight minutes of the match remaining.

Bayern Munich is unbeaten in their previous five fixtures against Leverkusen, winning on four occasions. Leverkusen’s last win in this fixture did come at the Allianz back in November 2019. They could also have taken confidence from the fact that the previous meeting between the sides ended in a 1-1 draw in March.

The pressure will be on Bayern at the Allianz Area on Friday, as they will need to get their title challenge back on track. Against a struggling Leverkusen side, we expect them to pick up maximum points, and a 2-0 win could be the most likely outcome.
