Gary Barta, the athletic director at the University of Iowa, has announced his retirement, effective August 1. Barta has been with the university for 17 years, during which Iowa won four NCAA national team titles and 27 Big Ten team titles. However, he faced criticism for settling lawsuits totaling over $11 million for claims of racial and sexual discrimination within the athletic department. An interim director will be announced next week.
