Eddie Jones leaves Danny Care out of England training squad as Saracens’ Hugh Tizard called up

Danny Care was taken off after 35 minutes in England’s decider with Australia in their three-match Test series in July

Eddie Jones has called up Saracens lock Hugh Tizard and left experienced scrum-half Danny Care out of his England training squad for the autumn internationals.

Jones has also included Northampton lock Alex Coles and nine Alex Mitchell.

Bristol prop Kyle Sinckler and team-mate Harry Randall miss out, along with Harlequins back Joe Marchant.

The squad will meet on Sunday for three days before facing Argentina on Sunday, 6 November.

Care, Randall and Marchant all featured in the 2-1 series win in Australia in July but miss out, while props Sinckler and Joe Marler are available but unselected.

England currently have a long injury list, including the likes of Saracens lock Maro Itoje, number eight Alex Dombrandt, wing Anthony Watson and openside Sam Underhill.

Centre Manu Tuilagi does return to the squad having overcome a knee injury, as does Leicester’s Ben Youngs, with club team-mate Jack van Poortvliet and Saints’ Mitchell the other scrum-halves named.

With only a year to go until the 2023 World Cup in France, head coach Jones told BBC Sport that the door is not closed for 35-year-old Care, who was replaced after 35 minutes in England’s Test decider against Australia in his last international appearance in July.

“We have always spoken about a squad of 23, of which 15 start and eight finish,” Jones told BBC Sport. “When the starters finish and the finishers start, it has a traditional aspect to it like a Nokia phone. You could only phone people and send messages and then you have iPhone and you can do everything.

“The game is evolving and we need to have a 23 that can do anything. So if we need to gain momentum in the game or stop the opposition from gaining momentum, we can play slightly differently.

“With Danny [Care] we had a plan of him playing quickly in the first half and then JVP [Van Poortvliet] coming on in the second half and playing a more controlled game. As it turned out, we felt the 35-minute mark was the right time to do it so we made the decision.

“In terms of changing the momentum of the game, he [Care] did that on Sunday when he came on and changed the game. You saw the energy he brought to Quins. He was fantastic on tour [in Australia] and we were really pleased with his contribution.

“The way he conducts himself, the way he plays, the way he trains. I have spoken to him since he came back and the opportunity is there. We definitely want to take an experienced half-back to the World Cup and it’s going to be a foot race between him and Benny [Youngs].”

After the Argentina Test England host Japan, New Zealand and world champions South Africa over consecutive weekends at Twickenham.
