Canelo Alvarez and Premier Boxing Champions reportedly part ways

The future of boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez is rumored to be uncertain.

According to ESPN, the Mexican fighter and PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) have decided to part ways even though there were two fights left in their deal.

The first of the three fights took place last September at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where Canelo comfortably defeated Jermell Charlo, who moved up two weight classes to challenge the super-middleweight champion, leaving his four belts at super-welterweight.

Canelo was supposed to fight Jermell’s twin brother Jermall on May 4, but a deal could not be reached for the bout on Cinco De Mayo, leading Canelo to explore other options.

Due to the disappointment of the previous fight, it may have been challenging to sell a pay-per-view event between Canelo and Jermall Charlo in the current market. Jermall Charlo returned to the sport in November after a two-year absence and a win over Jose Benavidez Jr, but the performance did not convince many that he would be a suitable opponent for Canelo in the near future.

Eddie Hearn and DAZN now have the opportunity to work with Canelo again, following a successful past relationship that saw Canelo dominate the super-middleweight division and become the champion.

Hearn also promotes rising star Edgar Berlanga, who recently knocked out Padraig McCrory and expressed interest in a fight against Canelo, despite his undefeated record lacking a significant win to propel him to the front of the queue.

Another potential opponent for Canelo is Jaime Munguia, an unbeaten super-middleweight with a record of 43 fights. Munguia recently stopped John Ryder, a feat that Canelo couldn’t achieve, in their fight last month. Munguia’s fights are currently aired on DAZN, which could facilitate negotiations if Canelo decides to return to the platform.

With David Benavidez moving to light-heavyweight instead of waiting for a showdown with Canelo, the inexperienced Berlanga or the improving Munguia could potentially face Canelo on May 4.
