Australia’s Lucas Herbert has suffered an all-time nightmare at the PGA Tour showpiece Players Championship, finishing dead last after shooting a combined +23 in the opening two rounds.
World number 51 Herbert’s opening round was already tough, with a triple bogey on the final hole seeing him card an 10-over 82. His second round at TPC Sawgrass was somehow even worse, a 13-over 85.
It included a five-over par eight at the iconic Island Green 17th, and another meltdown on the tricky fourth hole, shooting five-over nine. That included sending another three balls into the water. And his scorecard could have been worse, if not for a birdie on his final hole of the day.
Remarkably, it wasn’t the worst round of the day, with American Max McGreevy hitting a 17-over 89. Having gone three under in the opening round, it showed just how tough conditions were in the brutal winds on the famed Florida course.

Luckily, there’s better news for some other Aussies. Jason Day picked up his second-straight 70 to move to four-under overall, currently tied for sixth and four shots off the lead.
But it’s Min Woo Lee leading the charge in the second round. He shot a fine 68 in the first round and backed it up well, moving into third on six-under overall through 15 holes when play was stopped. He carded five birdies on the day to go with three bogeys.
